As the guys from Harley Francine set up their gear on stage for a quick soundcheck, the pit is still deserted. The few early arrivals look for shelter in the shade of the gazebos or under the trees flanking the lawn. The sky is clear, piercingly bright, with that distinct Nordic clarity that cuts through the prolonged darkness of the winter months with sheer light. The Dutch are no strangers to these endless daylight hours; at these latitudes, the sun sets well after 10:00 PM, and the blue hour stretches gently almost until midnight. Catching a set in total darkness will be a rare feat at this festival, and opening at 2:00 PM remains a daunting, exhausting task.
Unplugged Demos and Amplified Realities
The show kicks off with “When I was Younger”, one of the many unreleased tracks defining this performance. As the title suggests, the theme revolves around personal growth, introspection, and self-discovery. An unplugged snippet of this track, performed by frontman Luc de Vries with just an acoustic guitar, had been teased on the band's Instagram page no more than two months ago, but now the crowd finally gets to experience its full, amplified rock arrangement.
Like any emerging act navigating the realities of self-promotion, recording costs, and the pressure of immediate social media scrutiny or streaming platform algorithms, Harley Francine rely heavily on road-testing. By bringing new, unreleased material straight to the stage, they can gauge the crowd's raw reaction and experiment with different live arrangements. The ultimate goal is to enter the studio with tightly rehearsed material and clear ideas.
This mindset aligns perfectly with the string of video clips they’ve dropped on Instagram over the past few days. Short snippets of “Crows”, “Someday”, and “Uncle Marty” were first shared as raw demos before being brought straight to the ultimate proving ground at Pagefestival. It wouldn't be surprising if, after a thorough live workout, the band announces a return to the studio for their sophomore album, the follow-up to Derailed (released in 2022 as a self-production but recorded, mixed, and mastered at Hillroad Records studios).
Balancing Grunge Grittiness and Punk Hooks
From the Derailed era, the band treats the crowd to “Alice Blue,” a track heavily drenched in 90s grunge influences, and “Shepherd,” a more dynamic composition capable of sudden rhythmic accelerations contrasted by dreamy, atmospheric lulls.
Two other released tracks are plucked from their 2024 EP Sinner: the high-tempo “Running After You”, featuring a massively catchy pop-punk vibe that Harley Francine use to close out their set, and the title track “Sinner”, which instantly crafts an intimate atmosphere courtesy of its arpeggiated intro.
Harley Francine's performance serves as a brief, well-diversified journey through genres and eras. On one hand, they seamlessly cycle through punk, grunge, and alt-rock, even flirting with heavy metal territory during “You Freak!” (a moment highlighted when Dennis swaps his usual axe for a more metal-oriented, distorted, and razor-sharp extreme guitar). On the other hand, the setlist remains beautifully balanced, split 50/50 between familiar tracks and brand-new material.
The True Spirit of Festival Stages
As the heat intensifies post-set, I can't help but admire the sheer drive of these young musicians carving out their path toward well-deserved recognition. They have the aura of a band having the absolute time of their lives among friends, unbothered by the business side of music, living in a world where fame takes a backseat to camaraderie and mutual support.
While they are busy clearing the stage for the next act, I approach Luc and ask to see the setlist so I can take a photo. He looks at me, peels the gaffer tape holding it to the stage floor, and hands it over with a smile. The setlist even includes cues for guitar tuning and crowd banter.
Nothing is left to chance: a great live show is always an alchemy of notes and words, but also of direct dialogue with the people who showed up, curious to hear what you think about things big and small. This is the authentic festival spirit, and small-town stages exist precisely for this: to loosen up the tongue and become true entertainers. The raw talent is there, and so is the drive. Now, it's time to cut new records, keep growing, and welcome that extra bit of luck that always helps along the way.
Gli Harley Francine accendono il Pagefestival: alternative rock e road-testing nella morsa del caldo olandese
É un sabato pomeriggio che annuncia una stagione rovente. Ancora manca un giorno a segnare ufficialmete il solstizio d'estate, ma a Stadskanaal, nella provincia di Groningen, il caldo tropicale che sta investendo il Nord Europa ha deciso di accompagnare il weekend del Pagefestival.
L'onore e l'onere di aprire l'evento è affidato alla giovane band emergente degli Harley Francine, un giovane gruppo olandese di Alternative Rock molto promettente e ancora in piena fase di ricerca e sperimentazione.
Quando i ragazzi degli Harley Francine sistemano gli strumenti sul palco e fanno un fugace sound check, il parterre è ancora deserto, e i pochi presenti cercano un riparo all'ombra dei gazebo o sotto i rami degli alberi ai margini del prato. Il cielo è terso, luminosissimo come certi cieli limpidi che spezzano con la violenza della luce nordica il prolungato buio dei mesi invernali. Gli olandesi fanno i conti con le lunghissime ore di luce, perché, a certe latitudini, in questi giorni il sole tramonta dopo le dieci di sera e l'ora blu si estende con dolcezza fin quasi alla mezzanotte. Sarà dunque difficile assistere a un concerto al buio totale, durante questo festival, ma aprirlo alle due del pomeriggio resta comunque un bel compito, e per di più assai faticoso.
L'energia, però, di certo non manca agli Harley Francine, che hanno preparato una scaletta di 11 canzoni per una durata di 45 minuti. La fatica per il caldo e per l'arduo compito di rompere il ghiaccio sembrano non farsi sentire.
Dai demo acustici alla realtà degli amplificatori
Il concerto si apre con "When I was Younger", una delle tante tracce inedite che caratterizzeranno questa performance. Il tema, come suggerisce il titolo, è la crescita personale, l'introspezione, il cosiddetto self-discovery. Uno spezzone unplugged di questo brano, cantato dal frontman Luc de Vries con la sola chitarra acustica, era stato diffuso sul canale Instagram del gruppo qualche mese fa, ma adesso il pubblico ha potuto ascoltare meglio la versione rock e amplificata.
Come ogni realtà emergente, che deve fare i conti con la promozione, le spese di registrazione e la pressione del pubblico pronto a giudicare sui social media o a punire sulle piattaforme di streaming, anche gli Harley Francine fanno largo uso di road-testing, proponendo al pubblico le canzoni nuove per testare la reazione e sperimentare i diversi arrangiamenti. L'idea è quella di arrivare alla sala di registrazione con del materiale ben rodato e le idee chiare.
Certamente rientrano in questo spirito le numerose pubblicazioni di video che si sono susseguite negli ultimi giorni sul loro Instagram. Brevi estratti da "Crows", "Someday", "Uncle Marty" dapprima postati a mo' di demo e infine portati sul banco di prova del Pagefestival. Non ci sarebbe da meravigliarsi se tra qualche mese, dopo un attento rodaggio, il gruppo annunciasse di andare in sala di incisione per il loro secondo album, dando così un séguito a Derailed (uscito nel 2022 come autoproduzione ma registrato, mixato e masterizzato negli studi di Hillroad Records).
In equilibrio tra l'irruenza del Grunge e il Punk melodico
Dall'album Derailed il gruppo ha proposto "Alice Blue", un pezzo fortememente influenzato dal grunge degli anni '90, e "Shepherd", composizione più dinamica capace di accelerazioni improvvise alternate a parentesi più dreamy e calme.
Altre due canzoni edite sono state invece tratte dal minialbum Sinner (2024): anzitutto la veloce "Running After You", caratterizzata da un orecchiabilissimo punk con il quale gli Harley Francine hanno chiuso il concerto, e poi l'eponima "Sinner", che crea immediatamente una sfera molto intima grazie al picking arpeggiato iniziale.
L'esibizone degli Harley Francine è stata dunque un breve viaggio ben variegato in termini di stile e discografia: da una parte si sono susseguiti pezzi dal carattere Punk, Grunge, Alternative Rock, arrivando persino a sfiorare l'heavy metal con "You Freak!" (quando Dennis ha scambiato la solita chitarra con una più metallara, distorta e graffiante chitarra estrema); dall'altra abbiamo assistito a una scaletta bilanciata, al 50% tra brani già conosciuti e nuove proposte.
Il vero spirito della dimensione festival
Mentre il caldo si fa ancora più intenso, a concerto finito ammiro la voglia di fare di questi giovani in cerca della propria strada e della meritata affermazione. Hanno l'aria di chi si diverte da matti tra amici e pensa poco al business, vivendo in un mondo dove non conta ancora la fama ma la voglia di stare insieme e aiutarsi a vicenda. Mentre sono affaccendati nel liberare il palco per il prossimo gruppo, mi avvicino a Luc e gli chiedo di mostrarmi la scaletta perchè io possa fotografarla. Lui mi guarda, stacca il nastro adesivo con cui era fissata al pavimento e me la allunga con un sorriso.
Sulla scaletta sono annotati anche i momenti per accordare le chitarre e per intrattenere il pubblico. Nulla è lasciato al caso, lo spettacolo è sempre un'alchimia di note e di parole, ma anche di dialogo con la gente che è venuta ad ascoltarti ed è curiosa di sapere come la pensi riguardo a qualcosa di importante ma anche di meno importante, se ci sono novità, se hai un aneddoto da condividere o una battuta in grado di rendere più intimo e unico quel momento. Ecco, questo è lo spirito giusto, e i palchi dei festival di provincia servono proprio a questo, a sciogliere la lingua, a diventare bravi intrattenitori. E poi la stoffa c'è, e la volontà pure: adesso è il momento di produrre nuovi dischi e crescere, lasciandsi aiutare da quel pizzico di fortuna che non si disdegna mai e serve sempre.
